Dirty Dancing The Musical
Dirty Dancing – the West End's feelgood musical
When the producers of Dirty Dancing planned its West End launch in 2006, they could not possibly have thought the musical would emulate the success of the smash hit film it is based on.
They were wrong. Before the show even opened at the Aldwych Theatre it set a West End box office record by selling £11 million worth of advanced tickets. And theatregoers' love affair with Dirty Dancing shows no sign of abating, with the musical still playing to packed houses at the same venue.
Perhaps the show's success should not have been such a surprise, as the 1987 movie it is based on is regarded as one of the great chick flicks - the combination of a classic romantic storyline and Patrick Swayze appealing to millions of women around the world.
The film and the musical share the same writer, Eleanor Bergstein, and when she adapted Dirty Dancing for the stage, she managed to perfectly capture the mood of the original. The West End musical version of Baby and Johnny's romance also provides plenty of opportunity for extravagant dance numbers, with 35 songs brought to life by an energetic 37-strong cast.
Fans of the film will love the renditions of (I've Had) The Time Of My Life, Hey Baby and Hungry Eyes, as well as some '60s hits not featured in the screen version of Dirty Dancing.
The combination of well known songs, lively dance routines and an indulgently romantic storyline mean Dirty Dancing is one of the West End's true feelgood shows - even managing to provoke smiles from the usually hard-hearted theatre critics.
Writing for the BBC's website, Mark Shenton suggested that theatregoers could afford to have high expectations when going to see Dirty Dancing, as the musical would certainly live up to them.
"The show succeeds in providing a double dose of nostalgia, both for the '60s when it is set, and the '80s, when the original film that starred Patrick Swayze was released," he said.
Paul Taylor of the Independent suggested the musical is a perfect introduction to Dirty Dancing for people who have not seen the film, while the Evening Standard's Nicholas De Jongh gave the stage production perhaps the ultimate accolade.
"This pulsating, dynamically choreographed production offers something distinct and more intimate than the celluloid experience," he claimed.
Does the musical really eclipse the classic film? There's only one way for Dirty Dancing fans to find out.
